Rawinala

Rawinala is a training foundation located in East Jakarta that provides services to children with MDVI (Multi Disability and Visual Impairment). The school is recognised as the first, and to this day the only education centre of its type in Indonesia, and currently caters to children aged from 2 to 20 years. The foundation was established in 1973 by a group from the Christian Church of Java, who identified the need for a school that worked specifically with multi-disabled children, this allowing them to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling and involved lives in the community.

When the school was first established, there were only 2 students, however since then Rawinala has expanded, and presently there are over 52 students enrolled. The school provides a boarding house so that students can live on campus, however capacity is limited. Many students live at home with their families and transport to Rawinala each day, which is seen as the ideal option, so that students can lead engaging lives with their families.

Class sizes are usually limited to less than 5 students, in order to ensure student development is maximised. There are 60 full time employees at Rawinala, 34 of which are teachers, teaching assistants and social workers.
In addition to the school setting, Rawinala also consists of a separate boarding residence that houses graduates of the school who are not able to live independently.

The term ‘Rawinala’ comes from ancient Javanese language, and means “Light of the Heart”, which is in keeping with the schools motto of “Give your hand and your heart to service”.

1.

Parent Support Group
Held regularly once a month. In the program, parents could learn from each other’s experience, express their feelings and create other productive activities that affect the child’s learning process at home.

2 Sibling Training

In general, parents concern about their children’s future once they’ve passed away. Therefore, it is important to equip the child’s siblings with the right knowledge about disabilities.

3. Caregiver Training

One of the key success in education for disabled children is consistency. Besides parents, the caregiver also held an important role in the child’s development. Caregivers need special training because they often spent more time with children. Some caregivers were given the opportunity “to live” in Rawinala.

Accesibiities awareness in house and environment

Accessibilities are the tools and infrastructure that were modified to facilitate the child’s activities according to their needs. Hence, it is important for the parents to receive training on how to prepare a proper accessibility, such as a workshop to make symbols.

Thus, it is not impossible to serve the needs of MDVI children. If we strongly believe they are capable, then God will definitely endow ideas and creativities to us all.
